On Christmas Eve we had a wonderful turnout of 29 diners who enjoyed a dinner of baked ham, mashed potatoes, peas, a tossed salad and pasta with chicken (for those who couldn't have ham).  We were blessed to have approximately 20 volunteers to help with the serving and dish washing and were able to offer about six different types of desserts to our guests.

Thanks,
Dave

My team tells me there were about 27 guests there on Saturday; they served sausage & peppers, salad, vegetables and lasagna, and had a great time; they also tell me they sent home many packed dinners.

Have a great Christmas!

We served 24 people last night.  There were 6 children, 8 seniors and 10 adults.  There were about 40 take home dinners.  The meal was delicious, I heard the soup was a hit!
Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year,
Marie Manner

PS. Fran must be telling people to come and help serve on the first Sat.  We had lots of volunteers this week!

Bill Hamilton made at home:

  •  2 loins of pork (18 pounds worth),
  • 2 large disposable roasting pans filled with potatoes,
  • a gang of cranberry sauce, and about
  • one and a half gallons of lentil soup.
  • We also put out bowls of figs and drinks.

Take home:

We used a case of pork and beans, and a 5 pound package of hot dogs, spices and herbs and made a big batch of chili, and 2 1- pounds packages of rice.  As well as the left over roast and potatoes.

The serving team brought desert.

The following is a summary of what transpired this past Saturday:

Turnout was 29 people - 24 adults and 5 kids.

Big serving team turnout and they did a nice job including candles on
   the tables.

We cooked chicken Parmigianino (the breaded chicken cutlets from the freezer) with pasta & sausage.  We also made a turkey/rice & fresh vegetable soup.

There is one container of the hot sausage left over in the HNM freezer.   We also returned to HNM a bag of shredded mozzarella cheese, which I put in the freezer and also 3/4 of a bag of fresh garlic.

Mark Lederman scored a big hit when we went to Stop & Shop (Ossinning) - they gave him three huge boxes of pastries to hand out.  It included something like 8 pies, 3 large cakes, 10  containers of muffins, 10 containers of cookies, donuts, rolls and other stuff - my numbers maybe off (probably short), but they were really generous.

Cooking Team
Learning from mistakes.  On Tuesday night the box of pork ribs was taken out of the freezer and put in the fridge.  However, since it was a densely packed cube of small parts, it was till frozen solid at noon on Saturday.  We had do sock it and break it apart piece by piece.  It took forever.

Menu:

  • Pork ribs breaded and pan fried
  • Mashed potatoes & Gravy
  • Fried onions
  • Pork and Beans
  • Peas and onions
  • Hot fruit desert - Butter and Cinnamon, 10 cans of Canned peaches w/syrup, bag of figs, chopped, dried cranberries.

Take home:

  • Macaroni and tuna salad: with chopped onion, celery and carrot.
  • leftovers from dinner.
  • Bags of canned foods and drinks:  small can of Franks and Beans, Mixed Vegetables, Canned Tuna, Tomato Consume.  We also put out two cases of Coffee drink, Cranberry Cocktail Concentrate, and Canned Salmon.

Serving team:

Count: We had 25 guests, of which 5 were seniors and 7 children. We estimate about 35 takeouts.

> October 8, 2005

We made ziti/meatballs with salad and bread and butter and a tray of lasagna for those that didn't like ziti.... we had 8 sit down folks and 16 takeouts (each sit down took a few) .... so the rain kept a lot of folks away!!!!!!2 kids/0 seniors

"they made fish sticks, mac and cheese and veggies.had 30 including 6 children 5 seniors + 8 take-outs"
> September 3, 2005
This week we served 24 guests at Loaves and Fish on Sept. 3rd.   Adults - 8  Seniors - 10  Children - 6.
> August 20, 2005

We served 27 meals, including 7 children and 7 seniors, and did 37 take out. Our crackerjack cook team made BBQ chicken, fries and chili dogs with cheese and some kind souls had dropped off pasta salad, bean salad, assorted wraps, a head of lettuce and garden fresh tomatoes, which the team turned into a salad. My family brought some cookies so we had a dessert.
We had a ton of food, all of it a big hit with our guests. This cooking team really sweated over the meal - and dishes - all of their efforts greatly appreciated.

Additionally, the cooking team had made up 24 take away bags with cereal, pudding, GS cookies, mac 'n cheese, and little shampoo and soup packets.  Also a big success with our guests. All in all, an enjoyable Loaves event for guests, cooks and servers alike.

One thing I would suggest is that the cooking teams bring a bag of ice with them during these warm months - that was the only thing lacking.

Otherwise, all in all, an enjoyable Loaves event for guests, cooks and servers alike.

About the Loaves and Fish outreach program:

Started in 1993 by parishioners of Holy Name of Mary parish in Croton-on-Hudson, born from the Cornerstone experience, this ministry has grown to be an ecumenical effort of friendship to the poor of Ossining.
Every Saturday night a hot dinner is prepared and served to anyone who comes in at no cost .
This outreach project is called Loaves and Fishes, inspired by Christ's miraculous feeding of the multitudes.
Aside from the fulfillment each of us feels by worshiping God through service to our brothers and sisters, it is made more wonderful in the fellowship developed between so many of us who are from such different backgrounds, coming together in love for the sake of God.

An Ecumenical Ministry
