Year 2006: Meals Served Archive

About the Loaves and Fish outreach program:

Started in 1993 by parishioners of Holy Name of Mary parish in Croton-on-Hudson, born from the Cornerstone experience, this ministry has grown to be an ecumenical effort of friendship to the poor of Ossining.
Every Saturday night a hot dinner is prepared and served to anyone who comes in at no cost .
This outreach project is called Loaves and Fishes, inspired by Christ's miraculous feeding of the multitudes.
Aside from the fulfillment each of us feels by worshiping God through service to our brothers and sisters, it is made more wonderful in the fellowship developed between so many of us who are from such different backgrounds, coming together in love for the sake of God.

An Ecumenical Ministry

Volunteers and Donations Welcomed

Meals served at Trinity Church, every Saturday night from 5 to 6 PM.

There are cooking teams and serving teams, which have a 6 week rotation.

It went well – meal was delicious.

Luckily the Gilman family and another adult with them showed up to serve – they are very interested in helping out on a regular basis. They did a great job.

We had about 35 guests. Unfortunately since it was the servers first time doing it, so I was trying to help them set up while finishing dinner (there were 5 of them only as servers) and we missed putting out a sign in sheet because we were kind of late getting all set up.

No desserts; luckily I had cleaned out my freezer and brought several, and Maggie sent some stuff as well.

Tell the next serving team to bring plastic knives, we are out of them.

It went really well.  The number of people that showed up to help with serving the food was a little comical - probably 15 people or at least it seemed that way.  They brought desserts and were very helpful.  After they finished with the serving, the parents helped out in a big way with the clean up, which made a difference.

The count I was told was 24 adults and 10 children, but it seemed like more, because we went through a lot of food.  We had a lot of take homes (probably more than 40) and we ran out of food by 5:40pm.

We had for dinner:

  • Baked chicken with fresh herbs and garlic (about 35 pieces).  There's none left in the HNM Food Pantry.
  • Meatballs in a chili sauce/grape jelly sauce (about 300 balls)
  • Spiral pasta (over 6 pounds)
  • Black-eyed peas in apple vinegar w/corn, onions & scallions (non-Taco Bell)
  • Take-home was beef stew (about 2 cases of cans), which we spiked with a lot of fresh vegetables.
  • Bread sticks & fruit salad were also served.

I see us as back in the kitchen on January 22nd.  If we don't cross paths, I hope everyone has a great Christmas.

Kerry made awesome baked chicken, we also had rice pilaf and mixed veggies w/ soup salad & bread.  Very cute

JV basketball team from Briarcliff came to help serve and clean up.  They recorded about 25 guests.  Found lids to
take out containers in the white cupboard next to the window.

I didn't get the exact count, but I'm sure it was between 25 and 30. We made tossed salad, ham, mixed potatoes & yams, and peas & carrots.

It went very well. People seemed pleased, and there were lots of servers, especially children.
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Thanks to the many wonderful people who cooked and served on October 28th. i enjoyed my unexpectedly short stay at Loaves and Fishes and I am sorry I could not stay to serve dessert. However, the end of my night was even sweeter than the grilled peaches. My wife gave birth that night to a beautiful baby girl named Ava Noelle. Her three brothers are tickled (and soon to be overwhelmed with) pink. Thanks for the warm wishes!

Vin Andrews

We had 35 guests and about 35 take outs this past Saturday.  Numbers are approximate, but generally it was a good turnout.  My understanding was
that there were about 7 kids and about 10-15 seniors.

The menu was the country ham, chicken cacciatore, mashed potatoes, canned mixed vegetables, apple sauce, home made chicken vegetable soup and dessert was grilled peaches.

We had three servers show up and they worked well.  One guy had to leave (Vin Andrews), because his wife's water broke (#4).  If you hear what he
had, let us know.  There was a bit of speculation as he currently has three boys and we were wondering if he will break his streak.

We brought half a pot of soup and the hambone (make stock) back to HNM Pantry to store for Midnight Run.  If it gets in the way, let us know and
we'll move it.  Hope you enjoyed your vacation and thanks for the call.

Have a good week.

Dear Fran:

Saturday went very well. We served homemade chicken soup, penne with meatballs and spicy tomato sauce, fried green tomatoes, Italian bread, mixed-greens salad, and cookies and cake for dessert. We served about 40 guests, and gave out another 50 take home dinners. All prepared food was consumed. The serving team showed up on time and did great work.

On another note, I did not see the supplies in the pantry, so I did not bring anything over to the kitchen. As well, the Pastor of Trinity stopped by to let me know that they "cleaned up" the kitchen, and are now asking that we do not store anything on the metal rolling cart, nor keep too much foodstuffs in the room at any given time.

Take care, see you around. Hang in there.

Peace,
Deacon Steven

made chicken parm/pasta/peas/salad...27 guests inc 6 children..12 take-outs

> September 4,, 2006

We served: homemade minestrone soup, baked beef rigatoni with salad and bread. Dessert were homemade brownies and cookies.
It went great except that there were only about 25 guests. The rain and wind must have kept them away.

36 guests and we went through a good amount of food.

We had corn chowder that perhaps was a little to spicy for some tastes (used a lot of corn at Trinity).

We had chicken cacciatore and spaghetti for the main course.

Dessert was fruit cocktail with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Take home was Dinty Moore beef stew spiked with the spicy corn chowder.  We went through about a case and a half of the stew.

The serving team (Bobbi and Dave Family) were great and did a great job.

We need dish detergent and Brillo pads. We brought extra take home containers over.

It was a good day.

We had about 35 guests. We served fruit salad as appetizer, chicken pot pie & salad and then assorted desserts.

There was some weird scheduling thing with the server schedule though. We had our own server team in place (which worked very well) but random other people (one family and two sets of teenagers) kept showing up expecting to be serving as well. We didn't know about them or expect them, and it didn't work at all since we already had more than enough of our own servers. So just to confirm, when the All Saints team is on, we'll supply our own servers.

We had a great response on Saturday. Almost 50 residents came for dinner, and they ate everything we gave them (salad with veggies, juice, beef stew, rice, cookies). I took most of what we needed from the pantry, and spent about $50.00 on the fresh ingredients. I will send you my form and receipt. We did have a serving team show up as well.
Peace and prayers,
Deacon Steven

We had 18 adults & 4 children join us for dinner this past Saturday.   As you well know, we had a wonderful team of chefs who prepared another delightful meal.

Ed did it again by creating a wonderful gazpacho soup as the starter.  Joe followed up with a recipe that his Mom use to make which included chopped meat and an assortment of veggies.  A batch of white rice was also made to complement the meat dish.  Peaches were served as the dessert.

Take home included the breaded chicken that we found in the freezer along with canned raviolli.  Our guests were certainly pleased with the entire menu.

Unfortunately, there was a bit of confusion behind the scenes for a short period of time when we finally realized that our serving team was MIA.  Thank God for the turn out by our cooking team as a few of us stepped in as servers.  All in all, the day was tremendous especially when Rocco prepared his very own lunch dish for the team.  The day was truly a success in spite of the surprises...

God Bless  Us All.

> April 29, 2006

We had 28 people - 21 adults and 7 children. We served Italian sausage and peppers, pasta salad with veggies, green salad, bread and cookies/brownies which we brought (i.e. there was no dessert crew though I hadn't expected one as Claire said they usually did dessert as well as dinner). No complaints about the food and lots of take home dinners were wrapped up for people as we probably had food for 60! Kelly Thomann, Renee Ivanoff and I cooked the sausage and peppers which Kelly bought so she might give you the receipts.

There were about 30 people for dinner.  I don't have the total, the serving team does, so that will be up shortly.

We got a donation of two big boxes of bread and desserts, which were given out as part of the meal and to take home.

Two bowls of dried fruit were put on each table. Dinner was a dense veritable soup, meatballs and pasta in tomato sauce, green beans and onions, and cold fruit salad.

The meat balls were made with 9 pounds of the ground turkey in the plastic rolls, more of which are in the freezer. We used this one other time with poor results, but the heavy flavors in the meat balls were enough to make it tastie.
Take home was Franks and Beans, and the leftovers.
We also gave away 24 bags of groceries for take home.  Each contained 2 cans of tuna, 1 can of prepared pasta, 1 can of ice tea mix, 1 bag of brownie mix, and 5 double packs of shampoo.
The metal take home containers are terrible; they take forever to cover and constantly come apart; no one that has to deal with them likes using them.  The serving team was having a hard time with them too.  If we could get the one-piece Styrofoam containers again, that would be great.
FYI.  If you go to Ossining Bakery if you need bread crumbs, they will sell you a 5# bag for $5.

We served over 40 meals! The weather was beautiful and we ended up having to set up a 7th long table to accommodate everyone!

We made chicken thigh and drumsticks with BBQ sauce - rice and beans and salad. We had a full house in the kitchen - the Ricciardis (Mary Kate, Kyle and Erin and myself) and the DeMartinos (Deacon Steve, Dylan and Hunter) Deacon also brought a friend from St. Augustine's. The Cub Scouts came to help serve and we had a HUGE food donation from the family of the Sleepy Hollow boy who drowned.

We made 25 take home bags of food including sandwiches, bagels, muffins, cheese.... It was really wonderful.

> March 4, 2006

We served 26 people tonight at loaves and fish. It was a lovely meal of chili and hot dogs.

There were 5 children, 10 adults and 11 seniors.

Everyone had a take home meal, and some had 2.

> February 25, 2006

We had a big crowd, many servers and a great meal was served Saturday at Loaves and Fish.

We had a total of 34 guests 26 Adults, 3 Families, 8 Seniors

A meal of green salad and butter and bread, London Broil with buttered noodles, broccoli and green beans was served to most appreciative crowd. Homemade brownies and cookies were served with tea and coffee for dessert. The tables looked especially nice, set with candles and beautiful flowers donated by Croton Florist.

18 take home meals were distributed. We were not able to give out as many take outs as requested and no groceries were available for distribution.

We had a large serving team which included guest servers from Croton Cub Scout Pack 28 Den 10, "The Tiger Cubs".

Many hands made for a light load and break down was a breeze. We were done in record time 6:20

> February 19, 2006

We had about 30 adults, and we served baked ham, mixed vegetables, a tossed salad, and a baked potatoes/yam dish. For dessert, there was strawberry shortcake.

Thanks,
Cathy

> January 30, 2006

The serving team served 21 people.

The meal was Fresh Potato Cream soup, Spaghetti with Sausage in tomato sauce, green beans with garlic and chicken broth, Garlic Bread and hot Fruit Salad.  Each table had 2 bowls of dried fruit (cranberries and figs), juice and coffee and a lot of dessert.  Anticipating a turn out like last weeks, we made enough tomato sauce and pasta (8 pounds) for 40 people, there was an enormous amount of left over, which we packaged up and handed out to all who wanted it.

There were 24 take home bags prepared for the guests, each containing 2 potatoes, a box of cereal, one can of a pasta dinner, one mixed vegetables and a jar of peanut butter.  Two cases of the Coffee drink were given out to who ever wanted them.

> January 21, 2006

We served - I believe- 39 guests. We made hamburgers-under the broiler, mixed veggies, salad and bread.

I know there are other bags still in the pantry freezer.  But Jean Marie showed up with bread so we just served that instead. I know that I had taken 2 boxes of burgers and bought 80 rolls and we served everything. (Actually, we had 8 frozen burgers and rolls left which we gave to one of the families with kids that came

Have a great week. Thanks for ALL you do!
