About the Loaves and Fish outreach program:

Started in 1993 by parishioners of Holy Name of Mary parish in Croton-on-Hudson, born from the Cornerstone experience, this ministry has grown to be an ecumenical effort of friendship to the poor of Ossining.
Every Saturday night a hot dinner is prepared and served to anyone who comes in at no cost .
This outreach project is called Loaves and Fishes, inspired by Christ's miraculous feeding of the multitudes.
Aside from the fulfillment each of us feels by worshiping God through service to our brothers and sisters, it is made more wonderful in the fellowship developed between so many of us who are from such different backgrounds, coming together in love for the sake of God.

An Ecumenical Ministry

Volunteers and Donations Welcomed

Meals served at Trinity Church, every Saturday night from 5 to 6 PM.

There are cooking teams and serving teams, which have a 6 week rotation.

Just a short note on this past Saturday -

Went well and we had about 37 people. Joe Morey was a big help in the kitchen & with the people - good guy.

Anyway, we had a menu, which included the homemade pea soup (went over well), baked ham, potato latkes, apple sauce & baked beans. The take home was pasta w/sauce & the chicken tenderloins. Your friend brought the cake, which raised some eyebrows - it was some cake. Everything went.

Funny thing was Chuck's recipe for potato latkes - Mark Lederman citing potato latkes made by his much beloved Bubbie Lederman many years ago dismissed the idea that Chuck could make good latkes. A half hour later, Mark was a believer swearing that Chuck's latkes were every bit as good... not better, but as good as Bubbie's. Then again, Mark was a major participant in the creation, so maybe he's just sharing the glory - both guys did a great job.

Some lady said that she had not had pea soup since her mother died some 2 years ago, so Chuck gave her a apple juice container full of it... it made her very happy.

Things went well on Saturday. Our team did a nice job. We served baked chicken, rice and beans, salad, bread and butter, Halloween cookies and candy and juice. We had 35 people, and all but some of the rice and beans was consumed. We sent the extra rice and beans home in take-home containers. I noticed a number of new guests, and also noted that some of the old "regulars" were not there...

We had 34 guests on Saturday.  We served pumpkin soup, Tex-Mex lasagna and salad, bread & butter, dessert.

There is a note in the kitchen from Trinity asking for all L&F supplies to be organized and stored differently.  (for eg, they want the wheeled cart cleared off).  We did quite a bit of this, but it has meant that a lot of the plastic cutlery, paper goods etc. are very high up and practically inaccessible.  We may need to rethink how everything is stored there.  It would be easier if a lot of the paper supplies and plastic tableware was stored in a closet to be accessible.

This week, because of a wedding at Trinity Church, we were at First Presbyterian Church on So. Highland Ave, next to the old Post Office.  Signs were posted at Trinity Church, and one of our group went there to send people to FP.

The event went well and First Presbyterian is a good backup location.  The facilities were good and the guests got there OK.

The menu was as follows:

  • Baked ham in a mustard glaze (Used 6 4-lb. hams)
  • Mashed potatoes and gravy
  • Fresh carrots
  • Home made corn chowder
  • Take Home was spaghetti & meatballs.  (We finished off the frozen meatballs and we used one container of the crushed tomatoes).
  • For take home handouts, we used two cases of the tootsie roll pops and there was a variety of Hersey-type candies that we put in a big bowl for people to grab.
  • We also used a case or so of crackers & crackers w/peanut butter.

30 people (18 of whom were children) were served.

We put the unused take out containers back in Holy Name after we were done.  We did have a surprise volunteer, Todd Schmidt, who goes to Holy Name and heard you pitch Loaves & Fishes at mass.  He stayed and was very helpful - good guy.

I did tell him that he had to reach out to you to figure out where he could best be used, but he would be welcome to help on our team.

It went ok, but it was funny... I just had a feeling no one would show up to help... and it came true! It was Marisa and I cooking (usually we both bring our kids, but of course there were too many soccer, track, baseball and other events going on) - luckily I arrived early and had the water boiling and sauce made by the time Marisa arrived; then we did all the food prep til 4:30 and decided if we saw no helpers we'd set up ourselves... so we set up all the tables, set them and then the guests started coming.. we had about 35+ people...we managed to plate, serve, clean up, get desserts out and then break down the place and clean up.. just us 2 and NO ONE else (not a single server). Felt kinda good though. The guests could see it was just us 2, and we told them we'd need their help as well... they did pitch in clearing plates. ONE Hispanic lady stayed and helped us take down the tables, no MEN! (several were quite drunk). So anyway, it was ok because the time flew; we worked our butts off, and it felt good!

next time there will be 600 helpers and we'll be bored silly! go figure!

Anyway, the guests loved the pasta and the subway sandwiches we gave out. A fun time was had by all.

Sandra and I filled in this past weekend, here is the summary...

We served Braised Chicken Thighs with mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and tossed salad.  A total of 28 guests dined with us (8 kids) and we gave out about 15 take home dinners.

We originally brought a sheet cake for dessert, but were surprised to find a few bags of dessert which were donated to us.  With so much dessert, we decided not to use the sheet cake (and three trays of brownies) - they are in the freezer at the pantry.  Please spread the word to the next cooking team to please use the cake, we'd hate to see it go to waste.

Last week I made chicken cutlet parm, using the frozen chicken cutlets in the freezer. We also had spaghetti, bread and butter, corn and green beans, juice, and freshly baked cake for dessert. We had 30 people show up and sent home about 70 take-home meals. Everything went well.

Things went pretty well considering.  We only had a turnout of 15 people, but I would have to say that they were pretty satisfied.  It was the only time we ever had to throw out food, because we had too much.

The serving team was tremendous, showing up with green tableclothes, Irish soda breads, cups and a full contingent to help.  The kids also had meals when we had the leftovers, which was good.

The meal consisted of the following:

  • Cabbage soup (very popular)
  • Corned beef & cabbage (OK, but a couple of rejects - food good, but a streach for some)
  • Pan roasted chicken
  • Mashed potatoes with gravy
  • Corn w/onion medley (very popular)
  • Garlic bread
  • Take Home: Spaghetti & Meatballs

Two problems of note - we defrosted 8 of the Jennie-O turkey roasts during the week, put them in the refrigerator and on Saturday when we went to use them - they smelled bad, so we threw them out.  There are still some more that are frozen, but caution is probably important.

The second issue was that we didn't have take out containers.  There's probably about 75 lids left, but no metal containers.  We bought zip lock bags, but when we tried to give out the spaghetti in them, it didn't go over too well.

Again, one of the serving team ran out to a Chinese Restaurant that they frequent and brought back some styrofoam containers, which put us back in business.

Hope all is well.

The JTobin cooking team and the Tuttle serving team.

A total of 27 guests, including 3 families, were served a hearty and delicious meal by candlelight prepared by the crackerjack “Cornerstone” cooking team.

Dave and Bobbi Tuttle (Fourth Saturday Serving Captains, we took over for the Gaffney’s) ran the able bodied serving team of Jake and Katie Tuttle, Sarah and Isabelle Parkhouse and Perez boys et al.

The menu consisted of heaping portions of

  •  “Tom’s” Soup

  • Barbeque Chicken

  • Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

  • Glazed Carrots

  • Homemade Corn Bread

About 25 takeouts of penne, meatballs and sauce and leftovers were distributed. No one left without a take home or two, for those who asked for them

15 to 20 loaves of donated sliced healthy natural bread was served with the meal and distributed with take homes.

Iced Tea, Water and Apple Juice, Coffee and Tea were the beverages of the day. There was no ice for the drinks.

The Cooking Team mentioned that there was a shortage of drinks in the pantry. We could use some coffee, tea, sugar and artificial sweetener as well.

Luckily about 50 individual pies (apple, cherry, lemon, blueberry) were donated and served as dessert, as there were no drop offs from the “bakers”. Leftover pies were distributed in take homes.
